The artist has handed over the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which functions to protect the United Kingdom's small concert spaces.

He was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his third album People Watching was chosen as the best record of the last 12 months.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the MVT, in appreciation of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I did around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, major artists such as the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped venues that were confronting imminent closure due to issues arising from water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in upgrading facilities and gear that helped musicians and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in big venues backs the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is among several artists to donate his award funds to worthy causes.

In Pulp received the trophy in the mid-90s for their record their work, frontman Cocker declared that the act would give their prize money to the organization War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her award among a few good causes, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

In recent years, the band gave their prize money to the local youth club that nurtured their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients M People donated their winnings to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was quite enough," said vocalist Heather Small. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't need the extra, because we had the main prize. So our success touched the lives of others."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had saved several small stages in the South East, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in that area and the second in the city were bought under the public acquisition scheme, which is funded by a national body and music fans who buy "stakes" in the properties.
